Tomorrow my group is to distribute food for the Salvation Army to shut-ins. Not sure how we’ll do it in this deep snow. A few years ago I took food and toys to an inner-city family. The family was a single mother and five little kids who didn’t look alike.
I believe they may have had five different sires. I put the food in their kitchen and sat down with the kids at the tree. After I told them the story of the first Christmas, I said “Now I need some kid-hugs. Can somebody hug an old white man?” They looked around for a while then the eldest, a girl about 9 went into my arms. Then they all hugged me. I looked at the mother who was standing at a small distance and she was just sobbing. I said, “Please don’t cry, Mam. This is a time for joy. Jesus came to earth to show us how to live, and he died for our sins in our place. We can enjoy God for eternity.” She said, “I know all that. I cry because it occurred to me that my kids have never seen a man be nice before.” Those last words haunted me for days. I can’t even imagine what those kids have seen.
